Destination address of data from host to host (Basic)

Figure 01

Base on Figure 01, we have a question: let consider that both switches are using a default configuration, which two destination address will PC0 use to send data to PC3 ?

The answer is :

- The IP address of PC3

- The MAC address of the f0/0 interface of Router0

Explanation:

- We can see PC0 and PC3 will send data to each other through Router0. Router is  a device working on layer 3, the network layer, so it will only handle IP address. That is the reason why in the destination IP address of data is IP address of PC3.

- Because Router only handle the IP address, the MAC destination of data sent from PC0 only go to f0/0. That is the reason why the destination MAC address of data is MAC address of the f0/0 interface of Router0.

- Router0 will look on routing table and find which network that contain destination IP address. As in figure 01, PC3 stay on the same network as interface f0/1 of Router0 so that the data will be sent through f0/1.

- In the next process, the data which is sent out from the f0/1 interface will have the destination MAC address is MAC address of PC3 but the source MAC address will be MAC address of interface f0/1 of Router0.
